Following Sunday evening Mass on 24 August, the Justice, Peace, Ecology, and Development (JPED) Commission hosted a “Table Talk” event exploring the upcoming Māori Wards referendum from a faith-based perspective, using resources from Common Grace Aotearoa.

While most attendees were Catholic, the event also welcomed interested residents from other traditions, including Anglican and Baptist communities. Centred around small group discussions and activities following short videos, the gathering created a safe space for kōrero and reflection, encouraging open dialogue among participants. We were honoured to be joined by Deputy Mayor and Māori Ward Councillor Debi Marshall-Lobb—herself Catholic and a former teacher at local Catholic schools—who shared her experiences and spoke about the positive impact Māori Wards have had on Council and the wider community.

This event was supported by Common Grace Aotearoa, which offers the following resources:

    • A 6-minute explainer video featuring Church leaders sharing their perspectives on Māori Wards—ideal for group viewing or inclusion in a parish newsletter.
    • ‘Table Talk Conversations for Māori Wards in Local Government’—a 2-hour workshop designed for small groups, including short videos, discussion questions, interactive activities, and prayer. It helps church communities learn, reflect, and address questions or concerns around this topic. Contributors include church leaders and theologians such as Dr Alistair Reese, Jay Ruka, Sir David Moxon, and Te Aroha Rountree, alongside Māori leaders involved in the movement for Māori Wards. Hosting is simple—gather a small group at home or organise a session at your church. All materials are provided.

We also encourage other churches, parishes, and groups to host their own events. Click here for resources or to get in touch.
