Wings / Ngā Parirau is a programme designed to help people reflect on and grow in their faith. Along the way, participants learn—or have the opportunity to revisit—information about our Catholic faith. The goal of the programme is to help participants develop a deeper understanding of their faith journeys and what it means to be part of the Body of Christ.
The title Wings / Ngā Parirau is taken from Isaiah 40:31:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.”
A wide variety of people may choose to embark on this reflective journey. Some may be busy teachers with families and little time to spare, while others may have more time to dedicate to the programme. This is not intended to be an academic course. The programme seeks to meet the needs of all by offering a minimal amount of reflection material for every participant, while also providing further resources for those who have more time or interest to explore.
The programme is presented in modules divided into themes. The first in the series of booklets contains six modules, which include twelve themes. However, the format of the programme is flexible and can be followed according to the needs and availability of participants. Some who have completed Alpha appreciate the opportunity to continue exploring and deepening their understanding of our faith, particularly in light of the teachings of Vatican II.
At present, in the Diocese, there are four participant groups, mainly of more mature age. These groups vary in size from five to eight people. Some meet monthly, while others gather more frequently to share and discuss material from the programme booklets. A wide range of engaging topics are covered, following a sequential process that begins with Identity and Faith Journey, and continues through Spirituality, Holiness, Grace, and the Bible.
In these smaller, social groups, participants grow in trust and familiarity, enabling them to express themselves freely, share insights and understandings, and bring their questions and experiences to the table. Meetings usually include a simple shared supper, and occasionally, a barbecue.
