Syro-Malabar Bishop Visits Palmerston North Diocese
It was a real joy for the Syro-Malabar communities in the Palmerston North Diocese to welcome Bishop John Panamthottathil IC from Australia and chaplain Fr Vijoy Jacob IC.
Pope Francis appointed Bishop John in January 2023 as the second Bishop of the Saint Thomas the Apostle Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Melbourne. His pastoral responsibilities include communities across Australia and Oceania. During his visit to the 15 thriving Syro-Malabar communities in New Zealand, Bishop John spent six days in the Palmerston North Diocese in late May, visiting New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Hastings and Whanganui.
After celebrating Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite at Holy Family Church in Whanganui on 26 May 2026, he shared a meal with parishioners, presented prizes to the catechism students, and met with local community representatives, catechism teachers and Parish Priest Fr Craig Butler.
“Bishop John’s visit helped these communities gain an overview of the work of the Syro-Malabar Diocese. It also helped them understand the challenges faced by various communities, the support available, current community projects, and provided guidance on liturgical practices,” said local spokesman Joji Philip.
The last time a Syro-Malabar Bishop visited all the New Zealand communities was in 2022.

Thank You and Best Wishes to Jo Boult
Parishioners of St Mary’s Catholic Parish Whanganui gathered on Friday 31 July 2026, to farewell and thank their parish secretary, Jo Boult, for the generous spirit she brought to her ministry.
“You’ve been a dedicated servant, responding to countless requests for help with weddings, funerals, baptisms, First Communions and so much more. You’ve provided a listening ear to those in need and brought them comfort. You have kept so many balls in the air without going mad! Most of all, please know that you’ve done a great job over many years and you will be missed,” said Parish Priest Fr Craig Butler.
Well-known and long-time parishioner Judy Stein wished Jo well as she looked forward to spending more time with family and friends.
“You have been a shining light with your kindness, smiles and encouragement. You have helped us find solutions and pointed us in the right direction whenever we sought assistance,” she said.
Jo was presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers and a large thank-you card signed by many parishioners, each adding a personal message.
Fr Craig then invited everyone to raise their right hand as he offered a special blessing, asking God to bless and keep Jo always.
A scrumptious morning tea concluded the occasion.
